DANCING WITH THE MOON

DANCING WITH THE MOON

A Play by Linnea Rose

Lights up on JEN. JEN is dancing on the stage. Her arms are in place as if she was dancing with an invisible partner. After a few moments of JEN alone on stage giggling and laughing with her “dance partner”, PETER enters.

PETER

You dancing?

JEN

Mhm.

PETER

With who?

JEN

Not “who”. “What.”

PETER

What are you dancing with?

JEN

The moon.

PETER

Excuse me?

JEN

You’ve never danced with the moon, Peter?

PETER

Cannot say I have.

JEN

Have you ever wondered what it would be like?

PETER

Dancing with the moon?

JEN

(Stopping suddenly) No, silly. The Great Eclipse. It is said to make the entire country go dark.

PETER

Jen, you know that is a bunch of hogwash the media feeds us.

JEN

No, Peter. I believe it. Scientists have been studying the sun and moon’s lunar patterns for eyons. The sun will be trapped behind the moon for one million years while the moon absorbs the energy from the sun becoming the Super Moon.

PETER

Do you know how crazy you sound?

JEN

No, Pete. I am telling you the truth.

I mean look. She will be full soon. When she becomes full, then she will be lifted up into the atmosphere and start her rotation to the sun. You will see.

PETER

I don’t believe…

They stop.

JEN

It begins. Look, look, Peter, look. Do you see? Do you see what is happening?

PETER

Why are you still dancing with it then?

JEN

I need to. At least until it is time.

PETER attempts to pull JEN away from the moon.

PETER, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

PETER

Don’t you see what the moon is doing to you? You are possessed.

JEN

This is untrue. I support the Great Eclipse.

PETER

You do, do you?

JEN

(Smiling) Peter, it’s getting colder.

PETER is becoming more concerned.

Peter, come here. Come dance with us. The sun is almost gone. We are almost gone.

PETER resists.

Peter, why won’t you dance with us? Rejoice.

PETER

My last moments will not be spent suffering from the cold. I have eternity for that.

JEN

We will be warm soon.

PETER

Jen…

JEN

(She shivers.) I am alright, Peter. (She begins to crouch down to the ground, still shivering) Peter come, dance with us. (The moon has left.) Peter, why won’t you dance with us?

PETER begins to shiver. He crouches down to JEN and wraps his arms around her as is to warm her up. Black out.
