AFTERMATH

AFTERMATH

A Play by Linnea Rose

Sirens are blaring on top of sounds of utter destruction. The sounds are played in darkness. Lights up on WOMAN #1 who emerges from the darkness US. The women we see coming up are unclean.

WOMAN #1

It is over?

WOMAN #2 enters from SL.

WOMAN #2

Did we win?

WOMAN #3 enters from SR.

WOMAN #3

No. We lost.

WOMAN #2

What?

WOMAN #1

How?

WOMAN #2

We fought.

WOMAN #1

We believed.

WOMAN #3

They overrode us.

WOMAN #1

They can’t do that.

WOMAN #2

They never do that.

WOMAN #3

They affirmed it.

WOMAN #2

Do they know what they just did? The unrest about to ensue. The turmoil people will suffer.

WOMAN #1

Everything will be tested.

WOMAN #3

You know what this now means.

WOMAN #1/WOMAN #2

What?

WOMAN #3

The stakes are raised.

The WOMEN all look around at one another.

WOMAN #2

What’s our next step?

WOMAN #1

Continue to fight. Stand strong.

WOMAN #3

Put a wall up.

WOMAN #2

What?

WOMAN #1

What are you talking about?

WOMAN #3

I mean…that’s what they want us to be.

WOMAN #2

No! We need to speak the truth. We can’t care what people think.

WOMAN #1

We must remain unchoreographed yet honest.

WOMAN #3

They want you to revolt. They thrive on your fear.

WOMAN #1

Their say shouldn’t even be considered.

WOMAN #2

You’re right! It is our voice that truly matters.

WOMAN #3

Everyday we are thinking about how awful this past year has been. Yes, the coming fours years are unpredictable, but if anything this year has given us a glimpse of what is to come. Division. More so now than ever.

WOMAN #2

Our cultural state.

WOMAN #3

What cultural state?

WOMAN #1

Our rights.

WOMAN #3

What rights?

Stricken from us if we sit back and do nothing.

Break the wall.

WOMAN #1

It hasn’t been started yet.

WOMAN #3

Oh, yes it has. It’s been building since this chaos all began. Can you see it off in the distance? It’s very small of course but it is there. I can feel it.

WOMAN #2

How?

WOMAN #3

We will work together over time. That wall will come down. The fear will subside. Cultural will be regained. Rights will be restored.

WOMAN #2

How Utopian.

WOMAN #3

If these past eight years have taught me anything–it is hope.

Another loud crash of destruction is heard.

WOMAN #1

Was that your hope?

WOMAN #3

Don’t worry. It has only just begun. It’s coming down.

The WOMEN stare our into the distance. There is a glimmer of hope in all of them, but masked by fear. Beat. Blackout.

END OF PLAY
