UNCRUSTABLE

UNCRUSTABLE

A Play by Linnea Rose

A MAN is sitting on a train. He wears a suit and has a brief case. He pulls a peanut butter and jelly sandwich from his briefcase. He bites into it and chews it. He takes a second bite and chews. After he takes the second bite the train stops, the MAN is joined by YOUNG BOY. The YOUNG BOY is wearing a multicolored backpack and has a Starwars lunchbox and figurine and appears to be headed to school. The MAN does not acknowledge the YOUNG BOY

YOUNG BOY

(Takes out a peanut butter and jelly sandwich from his lunchbox) Mom used to pack these in my lunch box. Nothing like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with good ol’ kettle chips.

They each take a bite or two of their sandwiches.

There was that time when Robby Sanders tried to take my lunch from me and I refused. That was not a pretty sight afterwards. Mom was worried. She was more concerned that dad’s need to fight rubbed off on me. “Aggressive tendencies do not a young man make” as she would always say. Apparently she thought talking like Yoda made her able to relate to us more. Being the Star Wars Generation and all.

They each take a bite or two of their sandwiches.

Mmm. This brings me back. She was never the same when dad left. Everything was fine up until then. She wouldn’t leave the house if only for a bag of groceries. That’s where I came in. School. Groceries. Mathletes. Work. Home. Cook dinner. Home work. Repeat every day and insert random chore in place of groceries.

They each take a bite or two of their sandwiches. Pause.

I miss her.

They each finish their sandwiches. The train stops. The YOUNG BOY gets up and leaves the train (exits stage). The MAN takes out a Star Wars figurine from his briefcase. This is the same figure the YOUNG BOY was carrying as well.
