FOREVER IN A MOMENT

FOREVER IN A MOMENT

A 5-Minute Play by Linnea Rose

CHARACTER stands at a precipice and looks out on the horizon. All they can see are blurs of color: warm, cool, warm, cool, etc.

CHARACTER

This moment could last forever.

A VOICE enters

A VOICE

Would you want it to?

CHARACTER

(Almost as if they were too distracted to pay attention the first time) What?

A VOICE

Want this moment to last forever.

ANOTHER VOICE enters.

ANOTHER VOICE

Why not?

CHARACTER

Honestly…

A VOICE and ANOTHER VOICE listen intently.

…this moment is bleak. There have been so many moments that have passed by that would have been more opportune to experience for a lifetime. Every second it takes for a mother to give birth is a beautiful experience. Every minute it takes for an individual to retain information is a step toward improving life. Every hour a hungry, struggling mouth is fed represents the care society gives towards community. That community is what makes moments such as these insignificant.

A VOICE

Why only a lifetime?

ANOTHER VOICE

Why not forever?

CHARACTER

A lifetime can be forever.

A VOICE

Not human life.

ANOTHER VOICE

Human existence is not limitless.

CHARACTER

Moments are though.

A VOICE AND ANOTHER VOICE

We don’t comprehend.

CHARACTER

Human life might not be limitless itself but there are specific moments that live with you forever.

A VOICE

You mean the after life?

CHARACTER

I mean whatever life you chose to have when your life has come to an end.

ANOTHER VOICE

What do you want your legacy to become?

CHARACTER

I am not sure. I just want it to exist.

A VOICE

Don’t all humans?

CHARACTER

Am I?

ANOTHER VOICE

Are you what?

CHARACTER

Am  I human?

A VOICE

You have arms…

ANOTHER VOICE

…and legs…

A VOICE

…and eyes…

ANOTHER VOICE

…and a nose–

CHARACTER

I have human characteristics, yes. But am I a human being?

A VOICE

That is hard to say.

ANOTHER VOICE

This is a riddle. You are quizzing us.

CHARACTER

No riddler here. Just merely curious.

A VOICE

You are not supposed to be curious.

ANOTHER VOICE

You are told how to think, act, feel.

CHARACTER

That is not me anymore. From now on, my mind belongs to no being but my own. (Moves to sit down along precipice. This makes A VOICE and ANOTHER voice anxious and try to stop CHARACTER. They try and try to no avail. CHARACTER is successful at sitting down. A VOICE and ANOTHER VOICE start backing US. CHARACTER is now alone with the lights still changing in front of them.) “Nature’s first green is gold…” (Lights change to a color in between a warm and a cool. Then fade to blackout)
